Denna and I are off on another geography adventure!
We are learning about another country near and dear to Denna’s heart: Japan!
Children Around the World: Japan Unit Study
Spirited Autumn Hope is a new sister-site from Winter Promise, a company that I didn’t have very much experience with but had heard about through Charlotte Mason discussions online. While Winter Promise packages are large and usually cover an entire year of history, science, geography, or more – Spirited Autumn Hope is focused more on shorter, downloadable unit studies.
The Japan study that we chose to review is a 4-week individual study revised from the larger Children Around the World package. The downloadable unit study is $25 (pdf ebook – 70 pages) and the only other required resource is the book Japan from Kaleidoscope Kids, which we ordered from Amazon used for about $5.
There is also an option to add The Master Puppeteer to the study, which we already owned!
Japan through living books, notebooking, and crafts
Everything in the unit study is organized for you so you can glance at what activities you should prepare and notebooking pages to print for the week.
The study includes interesting reading selections (both in the physical book and printable selections from the e-bundle), notebooking pages, map activities, and suggestions for crafts and activities.
It is basically a mini history, geography, culture, and language study all wrapped in a nice Charlotte Mason bow!
Denna is loving the fun crafts and activities in the Kaleidoscope Kids book. There is a good balance between reading and doing so she doesn’t get bored, and we have printed out many of the ebook pages to keep in her countries notebook.
Since we don’t really have a schedule, we have been stretching this study out over more than 4 weeks. The material, while not dense, is enough to spread out over an entire semester if you wanted to.
Denna is 8 (3rd grade) but this unit study would be suitable for children 2nd-6th grade. It is great for a family study because you can pick activities that would fit with the ages and skill level of your children.
Besides the Japan study, Spirited Autumn Hope also has mini units on China, Western Europe, and Africa. There are also packages on maps, language arts, notebooking, Science, and more with new units being added over time. Raven is especially interested in their Equine Science modules for her Animal Science credit in 7th grade.
