Check out all the great August famous birthdays over at iHomeschool Network!

Since we are reading about the West and the Civil War here at home, and since our last birthday unit study was Wild Bill Hickok, I thought that it was only fitting to learn about another character in the Wild West Show- Annie Oakley.

Learn About Annie Oakley

She was born Phoebe Ann Moses on August 13, 1860 in Ohio.  She lived a very poor, harsh life.  As a teenager, she began to supplement her family’s income by shooting game, and soon became known as one of the best shots in the area.

She is most famous for her act in Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show, where she could shoot a playing card held sideways, splitting it in half.

Sharpshooter, entertainer, and celebrity- did you know that she was also a faithful wife, patriot, and activist during WW1?

Read and watch more about Annie Oakley:

Annie Oakley even became a “movie” star!  Buffalo Bill was friends with Thomas Edison, and one of his early Kinetoscope films features Annie shooting.

Other Resources

Our library had a few books about Annie Oakley.  Since Raven is at camp, Denna and Gaius browsed through them.

Annie Oakley was so famous that there was a TV show based off her life.  Although not terribly accurate, it stayed true to the spirit of The Champion Markswoman.

Over at my other site, Homeschool Commons, I am sharing some free Annie Oakley comic book downloads- based on the TV show. You can put them on your ereader or other device!

Your kids will enjoy the nostalgic look back at the Old West, and at 50’s Hollywood.

Check out the audio dramatization I shared from Cavalcade of America as well!

Lapbooking and Notebooking

Homeschool Share has a great lapbook based on the book “Who was Annie Oakley” (amazon link above).

I made a set of 3 notebooking pages for this unit study.  Since I am sharing fun Annie Oakley comic books over at Homeschool Commons this week, I made the first page to look like a comic page.  You can make your very own Wild West entertainer comic strip!

Download the Annie Oakley notebooking pages from my Google docs. (File > download)

  1. Jill says:

Ever since I was a child I have always loved learning about Wyatt Earp. I have even ventured out to Tombstone several times.

    • Aadel says:

I would love to go to Tombstone! We have been to Dodge City and Tucumcari, as well as a number of other old west towns near Fort Bliss. I think it would be cool to go on a vacation where you explored all the history of the Wild West!

  2. Ambre Sautter says:

Honestly? It’s Annie Oakley. I did a ginormous report on her in high school. Oddly, it’s the reports I wrote on her, Shirley Temple, and George Lucas that I remember most. Ah, childhood!

  3. My favorite Wild West character? I guess I’m intrigued by Wild Bill Hickock.

  4. Judy says:

I know very little about ANY Wild West characters, but Wild Bill Hickock has always interested me because my grandma had a brother whom everyone called “Wild Bill.”
