homeschooling read aloud books

If there is one thing my girls enjoy about reading out loud, it is goofiness!  We are always up for a good giggle right before bedtime or during a rainy day.

Some of the books on my list might not strike you as silly, but my girls can spot the irony in every situation.

Here are ten books that you can read out loud to your kids in order to give them the giggles:

1. It’s Raining Pigs and Noodles

This book of poems is all kinds of silly.  From getting into mischief when your parents are sick to raising virtual chickens, the poems are fun and bring up a lot of discussions.

2. Walking The Plank To The Baptism Tank

We bought this book for Denna when she was worried that she would drown during her baptism.  She loved this book because the little boy has such silly notions about what baptism is all about!

3. Bunnicula

Don’t let the thought of vampires scare you away from reading this book to your kids.  It is light-hearted and fun (no blood, no scariness).

Bunnicula is a bunny that might be draining the juice from the vegetables at night.  Great characters and a classic mystery read!

4. Mrs. Piggle Wiggle

When the kids in town are naughty and need an object lesson to set them straight, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle always comes to the rescue.

My girls laugh hysterically at some of the “lessons” Mrs. Piggle Wiggle concocts, and they ask me NEVER to figure out how to do them!

Denna was excited about choosing some of her favorite read-aloud books and we decided to make a video of her favorites.

The rest of the list are ones that I chose that I know the girls enjoy.

5. Mr. Putter & Tabby Feed the Fish

Mr. Putter and his old cat Tabby decide to get a fish.  But, Tabby has a little problem.  A fish problem, to be exact.

These books are so loveable and silly!  ”Feed the Fish” has always been our favorite to read together from the series.

6. Strega Nona

Poor Big Anthony!  He just doesn’t know what he is getting into when he decides to mess with Strega Nona’s pot while she is away.

My girls love to talk about how they would feel if spaghetti noodles started covering our entire town.

7. The Stinky Cheese Man

The modern, sarcastic fairy tale- if you will.  Jon Scieszka has a knack for the irreverent, the irrelevant, and the downright bizarre. My kids love that.

8. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

We read this book during the Christmas season every year.  It is both hilarious and very touching all at the same time.

My kids have learned more about grace and loving your neighbor than any other book we have read (well, except the Bible of course).

9. The Wind in the Willows

Classic story!  I used to watch this series on PBS as a child.  We have listened to the audio book and the girls laughed so hard at Mr. Toad’s antics!

10. Fox in Sox

I don’t know if my kids laugh more at this book, or at me trying to read this book.

Either way, it is a blast!  We especially like the Tweedle Beetle Battle.

Aadel! Tweedle Beetle Battles are still laughed about between my sister and brother and I — we loved that book when we were little!

All of the Strega Nona and Big Anthony books are a hit in our house now – and I remember a lot of the books on your list from when my children were small. I think we loved Amelia Bedelia a lot, too!

    Great list!

Denna has an Amelia Bedelia book, but she has never asked me to read it to her. Fox in Sox was my husband’s favorite as a child too! Mine was If You Lived In A People House, oh and Go Dog Go.
